TWPI will hold cast auditions for TREASURE ISLAND, an adaptation by Phil Willmott, on Thursday, October 13 and Friday, October 14, 2011 at 4 PM at T Building, MHS.

The play is set in 1772 and starts in England.

All students in grades 6 through 12 are invited to audition. We need pirates for the trip to tropical Treasure Island, aargh!

College Workshop for Seniors and others

TWPI is sponsoring a COLLEGE NIGHT, well, actually COLLEGE DAY, the first of our college workshops, on Saturday, September 17, 2011, 1 PM. The target audience for this particular workshop is any senior in high school, whether already decided to go to college or still undecided. Others (whether in high school or middle school) may also come.

We want to help support students and make sure they meet deadlines and get the best chance for admission and scholarship help in the programs that may fit their interests most appropriately.

Come! Location is T Building at MHS, but this is not just for MHS students, but students from all over the CNMI.

Directors' Auditions--TREASURE ISLAND

TWPI will produce TREASURE ISLAND by Phil Willmott (adapting the novel by Robert Louis Stevenson) as their SY 11-12 Chapter Play. It is scheduled for performance on November 18th, 19th, and 20th.

We are now looking for a Director and Assistant Directors and Stage Manager. These roles are handled by HIGH SCHOOL students. An adult mentor will be available, but the full responsibility of the jobs rests on the shoulders of the actual Directors, etc.

The dates are subject to change. Locations will be announced as arranged.

Math Court

MathCourt is back for another school year, thanks to the dedicated administrators that run the program. The first half of the year will be for the Middle School and High School Division (6th-12th grade). There are some changes that we will be discussing at our coach's meeting, so it is vital that all schools interested attend this important meeting. Dates and deadlines will be discussed during this meeting as well.

2011 Festival News and Notes-#1: Main Stage

I am once again putting together some news and notes about the Thespian Festival. The 2011 Festival is scheduled in Lincoln Nebraska for June 20-25.

Early Show
The Fantasticks by Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones. Kennedy High School (Iowa) will present the show.

Main Stage attractions include:
The Drowsy Chaperone by by Bob Martin and Don McKellar, to be staged as a joint school production of Floyds Knobs High School and New Albany High School (Indiana).

Rabbit Hole by David Lindsay-Abaire, to be presented by Dubuque Senior High School (Iowa).

Good Boys and True, written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, will be presented by Harry S. Truman High School (Pennsylvania).

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, conceived by Rebecca Feldman with music and lyrics by William Finn, a book by Rachel Sheinkin and additional material by Jay Reiss. Hebron High School (Texas) will stage the show.

Jekyll and Hyde based on the novel by Robert Louis Stevenson, original stage conception by Steve Cuden and Frank Wildhorn. The music is by Wildhorn and the lyrics and book are by Leslie Bricusse. The All-State Missouri Cast and Crew will present the show.

Avenue Q, School Edition, conceived by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, who wrote the music and lyrics. The book was written by Jeff Whitty. Bradford High School (Wisconsin) will stage the show.

Starmites by Barry Keating and Stuart Ross. The show will be presented by Claremont High School (California).

College Night

The Thespians of the Western Pacific Islands (TWPI) would like to extend to you an invitation to our annual “College Night” on Tuesday, February 22, beginning at 6:00 pm and running until 8:00 pm, with a “Q and A” to follow. The “College Night” will be held in Room 101D at Marianas High School.

ALL GRADE LEVELS ARE INVITED TO ATTEND, not just our Juniors and Seniors – it pays to prepare early!

This event is designed to provide additional college guidance for those students who may wish to continue their education in the Dramatic Arts, or related fields, at the college / university level.

All aspects of the college admission process will be presented with a focus on opportunities for Thespian and NFL students. There are specific colleges and universities that seek out our NFL and Thespian students; there are special scholarships available; there are unique audition opportunities.

This message in from our fearless Math leaders:

Hi Coaches,

To accommodate the large number of participants in the NFL competition, we've had to deal with room changes and event delays, but thanks to your patience and willingness to adapt to change, we feel the event was a success for all, so thank you for that. Math Court will not be able to function without your help.

The November event is fast approaching, and we have a few reminders for you so that we can run the event as efficiently as possible:

Ribbons can be picked up at the next event scheduled for November 13th at Chacha Oceanview Jr. High. We understand that many of the competitors in Math Court are also involved in NFL as well. Because of this, our start time for the students, is 1400. We will start accepting payment at 1300 and hold the proctor's meeting at 1345.

Registration deadline is November 5, so don't wait till the last minute to ask for codes and registering your students.

Just because Dora sends you codes that you've requested, it does not mean they are registered! Few schools confused this last event, and so some students weren't allowed to participate. As soon as Dora sends you the codes, register them using the google doc link. You can register more than once, so you do not need to wait for new codes to register veteran competitors who already have codes.
As soon as registration is received, we will send you a confirmation that we've received it, along with a copy/paste of the registration received (complete with time-stamp and code). That way, you can verify your codes and also use that e-mail as a basis in case a problem occurs. We will check google docs frequently, but a quick e-mail telling us you've submitted the registration and want confirmation is also helpful for us.

The Saipan Tribune finally picked up the "Zombies Are Hot!" press release. Yay!

Clarissa David of the Trib has also expressed interest in thespian activities, as well as forensics, math court and the CCHLS competitions. So perhaps we'll see more press for all of our competition participants.

It's called a "preliminary" cast list. TWPI scheduled auditions for their up-coming musical, Zombie Prom, this week. The turnout was staggering! I'm still waiting for the final tally--update--57 students auditioned for stage roles, from MHS, SSHS, GCA, MBA, SIS, and HJHS. On Tuesday, September 14, room D 101 at MHS was packed with enthusiastic students--group A-- awaiting their turns to sing and read for the cast.

These students returned Thursday, September 16 for dance auditions, which included a 30 minute lesson and practice session on the lindy given by Mr. Easton. He had no difficulties executing moves!

The students worked up a sweat and had fun, too.

While group A students were learning the rehearsal dance moves on Thursday, more students --auditioners group B--were at D 101 taking turns singing and reading for their first stage of auditions!

After group B cleared the room from their hard work, the dancing auditioners took turns in groups of three pairs showing off their new lindy moves.

The group B auditioners (and any group A students who didn't make the Thursday dance drill) returned for dance auditions on Saturday.

And then there were band and musician auditions on Saturday.

Directors Dowen Jocson, Chiantee Rosete, and Craig Hart have been busy watching every single student tryout, taking notes, giving audition grades, etc.

They held some call backs on Sunday and may have more forthcoming, as they process all the information they've accumulated and work on casting. While they hope to get every interested student on stage, they will have to assign roles and post their casting list before moving on the daunting but fun task of rehearsing this musical comedy.

The energy is atomic!

Another school year has started and the CNMI Math Court administrators are looking forward to a year of fun and challenging competitions. The MC team is happy to announce some new changes that will be beneficial to you coaches.

We have a new website! Our webmaster and administrator, Mr. Manny Borja created the CNMI Math Court website to streamline our operations. The site will contain all information needed, including dates/deadlines, rules/format, registration, and event topics to name a few. Even the matrix will be posted on the website as well.

As you may have already noticed, we have a new e-mail address as well. We have shifted our address to Gmail, because with applications like google docs, it was more conducive to our operational needs. Please take note of our new address cnmimathcourt@gmail.com. We will no longer be checking the yahoo.com address so please make the changes.

Math Court for K-5 will be back! Due to the lack of administrators, we had no choice but to cancel the K-5 Math Court last school year. This year, we have decided to bring back the elementary school Math Court at the second half of the school year. Please look forward to that!

That being said, there will be a very important Coaches Meeting for the 6-12 grade division on Tuesday, September 14th. The venue/time for the meeting is at Dandan Elementary School cafeteria at 5PM. It is vital that all 6-12 grade coaches attend the meeting, for the format of the competition and registration has changed.

Auditions Notice--ZOMBIE PROM!!!

TWPI has set the auditions for this year's musical comedy, ZOMBIE PROM.

This will be an entirely-student production, meaning the directing, technical aspects, and stage performances are all in the hands of the students. Adults are only advisors and back-up help.

Auditions for the Director(s), Assistant Director(s) and Stage Manager are set for September 9, 2010 from 4 to 6 PM at MHS D 101. Open to High School students.

The selected student directors will then hold auditions for Cast on September 14 and 16, 2010 from 4 to 6 PM at MHS D 101. Open to students in grades 6 through 12.

Technical theatre sign-ups--including lighting, set design and construction, costumes, make-up, special effects (there are 2 SFX events in this show), props, and tech crew during performances--are scheduled for September 14 and 16, 2010 from 4 to 6 PM at MHS D 101. Open to students in grades 6 through 12.

Students interested in marketing--including program, poster and ticket design, distribution, advertising, and sales--may sign up on September 14 and 16, 2010 from 4 to 6 PM at MHS D 101. Open to students in grades 6 through 12.

Musician auditions are not yet scheduled. Students interested in performing as part of the rock band for the show must be able to read music and be willing to commit to rehearsals with the cast as needed.

Tentative performance dates are now set for Halloween weekend with alternative dates of November 5, 6, and 7th.

For the first time ever, CNMI students participated in the American Regions Mathematics League competitions. The CNMI team, comprised of fourteen students and seven coaches, traveled to the University of Nevada at Las Vegas for the two day event, held June 4-5, 2010. According to the event coordinator, Mrs. Dora B. Miura, the students participated in five events: Power Round, Team Round, Individual Round, Relay Round and the Super Relay Round. Results included a THIRD place in the Super Relay Round. The top scorers on the CNMI 2010 team were Won Woo Choi (7th grader from MBA) and Allen Park (7th grader from CCA).

Coach Vanessa Pritchard said the the competition was very steep, but it provided an opportunity for our students to compete in mathematics against the top students in the nation. “I hope that this competition will encourage our students to strive for the opportunity to compete in future competitions,” she said, “I know it will help the coaches better prepare the students for such challenges.”

The students came from Calvary Christian Academy, Marianas Baptist Academy, Northern Marianas Academy, Saipan International School and Saipan Southern High School. Those who participated were Soo Jin Choi, Won Woo Choi, Sung Hoon Ham, Joseph Jang, Hanbert Jeong, Minchong Kang, Jessica Lee, Hye Young Oh, Manatsu Omori, Allen Park, Jeremiah Perez, Mindy Song, Taek Han Yoon, and Han Byol Yu. The coaches were Reo Arriola, Tony Flores, Jimmie Horath, Dora B. Miura, Paul Miura, Susan Pajarillaga and Vanessa Pritchard.

The students spent most of their time on the competition but also had the opportunity to experience some American scenic icons. “The Hoover Dam was an amazing sight,” said Vanessa Pritchard. “I think we would have enjoyed it more if we did not have record setting heat at 110 degrees Fahrenheit!” Mindy Song found the competition hard, but then took the opportunity to relax by taking in the night in Las Vegas, which she describes as “shiny.” Manatsu Omori said, “The competition rounds made our minds think... a lot , but staying on a college campus was a fun experience. We also heard a lecture from the famous Kevin Wang.”

The students took a tour of the University campus and visited the Freemont Street Experience, a pedestrian mall. “It was a very memorable trip,” Mindy Song said, “and, if I can, I look forward to going again next year.”

Zombie Prom--Getting Ready #1

I am in the midst of all things 1950's, nuclear, and zombie-ish as back-up support for our planned TWPI production of ZOMBIE PROM this year.

This post is just a collection (so I don't lose track) of some information I've come across on hairstyles of the 1950's.

For the Girls
For a simple demonstration and explanation of the classic French Twist (I see Delilah Strict in this hairstyle), watch this video.

Personally, I think the girls should use pony tails and page boys for school scenes (unless we're lucky enough to have someone with SHORT hair and then we can experiment with pin curls, etc.). French twists and chignons for evening.

For the boys:
I'd like to see the boys in any of the typical men's styles of the 1950's--burr, butch, crew cut, flat-top with or without fenders, pompadours with or without sideburns, and even a duck tail or two.

"I attend Calvary Christian Academy as a sophomore. This NFL trip was my first time to compete in Nationals, as well as my first trip to the USA. Before this, the longest trip I ever had was a three hour flight to Japan. You could say that the twenty hour flight to Kansas City, Missouri was a LONG one! Luckily, this long flight gave us an opportunity to get close to each other.

The NFL CNMI team consisted of ten girls and four boys from five schools. At first, I felt a bit out of place since everybody else sort of knew each other either from past NFL/NJFL competitions or from school. But I soon found myself getting very close to them, to the point that we could tell each other anything.

When we heard that Nationals were being held in Missouri, we weren't so keen on it. We thought--boring, flat, and cornfields. But let me tell you, some of the places we visited were amazing--especially this dainty little town, which we able to tour while riding on a horse carriage. Probably the only thing we didn't really enjoy was the unpredictable weather. One minute, it would be super sunny and the next, it would be raining cats and dogs.

Since we stayed there longer than previous competitions, we were able to go places such as Worlds of Fun (an amusement park), shopping malls, and restaurants. We were able to get in some fun before the competition started, as well as practice in the motel.

As far as the competition goes, it was TOUGH. Everybody there is the real deal. This was my first time, so I was a bit nervous to compete in Expository. But everybody was so supportive of each other that a lot of us broke to the next round.

Competing in Nationals gave us valuable tools to succeed in NFL Regionals. We met interesting people in the Nationals. We even got to do community service by packing food for Haiti.

This NFL trip was one of the best experiences I've had. I was able to meet great people and get close to them. Probably the best thing about this trip was being around each other. I love everyone on the CNMI team. We had so many laughs! If you're thinking of joining NFL I definitely encourage you. It's a great program that provides plenty of opportunities. I miss everything about the trip, except maybe for the jet lag...and sales tax."

Some additional comments from the participants:
From Esther Manzano—GCA coach. Said they went to Living History Farms-a living museum of 300 years of how early Americans live. “We saw their farms, houses, how they lived, clothes they wore.” Also went to Adventure Land, an amusement park with different rides, gift shop, restaurants, water park; the Iowa State Capitol where they saw the architecture, library, Supreme Court Office, legislative offices, etc.

June 25, 2010 was the first day of the competition, held at Dowling Catholic High School. The students competed in Pattern A events: Dramatic Interpretation (DI), Humorous Interpretation (HI), Duo Interpretation, Prose, Poetry, etc. Students were busy doing three rounds in their events, while the coaches were busy judging other students.

June 26 was the second day of competition. Pattern B events included Original Oratory (OO), Extemporaneous, Impromptu Speech, etc. Students competed in three rounds; coaches judged.

June 27 was the final day of competition. Those who advanced competed in quarterfinals, semifinals and some students in storytelling. This was also Awards day: Kanata Omari-semifinalist in Extemp; Hye Young Oh-quarterfinalist Impromptu; Matthew Lopez-quartefinalist, dramatic Interp; Arianne Narvaez-quarterfinalist-poetry; Darvhan Moses and Devonne Dotts—second places in storytelling.

Esther also said this was her first time to judge in a national competition. “The students are really good performers. Sometimes it is hard to rank them from the best to the last.”

Sang Hyuk Park, 14 year old at MBA. “When I was on the plane, I looked down through the window and it tells me that the world is big.” “I was so nervous before I competed in the NJFL, but after that I got confidence. I want to do better next year. I really had a good experience." Also missed rice at the restaurants!

Kimiko Tenorio, 12, GCA. Had never been to the mainland before and found it exciting, even to ride in the plane. "The competitions were exciting. I got to meet new people and make some new friends. Even though we were kind of nervous to speak in front of faces we haven’t seen, it was exciting and fun!” She said Iowa was cold, windy and there was thunder and lightning. The competitors were tall!

Kanata Omari, 12, MBA “At first I was disappointed when I did not go to the next round on the first day. Then my coach told me that there was tomorrow for more competition.” Also missed rice—“No rice for one week--I almost died.”

Kimberly Camacho, 12, GTC—“The NJFL trip to Des Moines, Iowa was really exciting and fun. It took 24 hours to get there…The places we went to were really cool…The competition day was tough…Overall the trip was awesome!!”

Hye Young Oh, 13, MBA—Commented on how the NJFL team members were supportive to each other.

Darvhan Augustine V. Moses, 13, MCS—“It was my first time to go to the states…We had a long layover in Houston, where the airport is really big. ... When we got to the competition, I felt nervous because of all the tall people. I didn’t know middle school people could be so tall! But when I started, I didn’t feel that nervous anymore.” Also said, “I was happy with a 2nd place finish in storytelling.”

Eron Constante, 14, SCS. “Considering the competition that’s here on Saipan, there’s a chance for anyone who puts in some sort of effort to get a free ticket to the states. All the practices, showcases, and experiences after the CNMI regional competition were helpful. However, once we stepped from the airport, we knew what we were getting ourselves into…On competition day, we knew the next three days were going to be extremely tedious. When I got to the school, I found myself as a small fish thrown into a big pond. Competition here made me feel as if I was stupid, but it taught me what I needed to do when I watched the competitors in the Finals. At least during the Award Ceremony, it was a relief to see four of my teammates had made the break.” “All in all, it was a good trip.”

Matthew Lopez, 14, HJHS. “The NJFL trip was a success. I had a great time in Des Moines, Iowa. I had the opportunity to compete against the best people of the US. It was a great experience.” Says he had jet lag, dizzy and tired a lot. “I was really scared and nervous at the competition. Competition there was tight and difficult. I really didn’t expect them to be that good. “ “We were successful, though, getting into quarterfinals and semifinals. Our team was really supportive and watched the quarterfinalists and semifinalists in their performances.”

Alina Ishikawa, 14, MBA. Her first time going to the mainland USA. She noticed that the daylight hours were longer and it was still bright at 8 PM. And mentioned that the students there “talked professional.”

The students had an amazing experience at the 2010 International Thespian Festival. They were interviewed by journalist and playwright Elgin Zulueta of the Asian Journal.

They met representatives of Samuel French who watched their performance of PULLMAN CAR HIAWATHA and praised them, including sending an e-mail Wednesday June 30 after the Festival saying, "We are still applauding you today!"

They competed in individual events and have received written comments to help them improve their performances in the future. (We'll have more summary and wrap up on the overall ratings after this information is reviewed thoroughly by the coaches and Thespian Chapter Director.)

The high school juniors went to college auditions. The performance auditions garnered callbacks (colleges who are now recruiting our students) from Florida International University, St. Louis Universtiy, Savanah School of Art and Design, Southern Illinois University, Texas Christian University, and University of Wyoming. The technical theatre students had more callbacks from an even wider range of colleges and universities.

All of the students and coaches saw many plays, attended workshops, and generally got to savor theatre in all its glory for an entire week.

Thanks to the coaches, PSS, and all who made this possible. Really--THANKS!

We know that some of our students did very well in college auditions(the technical theatre students in particular) and some of our students generated some interest, but not as much as WE think they deserve.

Why is that?

Here's some insight directly from one of the auditioners (from Florida International University). It may be too late for this year's students, but it is important to keep this accessible for our students who will audition next year and in the years to come.

The weekend before Festival started, the TEAM 2010 has visited the University of Nebraska Museum of Natural History and toured the Nebraska state capitol.

They continue to be busy during Festival attending workshops, main stage shows, chapter select and freestyle shows (one acts), and other activities. They are also rehearsing for Saturday's performance of PULLMAN CAR HIAWATHA at the chapter select showcase. I haven't heard if any of our team have gone to any of the dances.

I've heard from both Mrs. Tina Foster and Mr. Harold Easton.

Tina's report (in part):

It's a big festival! The new kids were excited and nervous, but after a couple of days of going to some activities the nerves have settled down a bit. ... All the kids had IE's today. ... They've all been to some workshops and we continue to run our lines and practice whenever we have a break between activities.

Our lay over in Japan (7 hours) was put to great use. Dowen had the kids practicing and practicing. We put up our play on Saturday and by then they should all be ready.

Tonight we saw another play and it was amazing. The "oohs and aahs" I hear from the kids makes me realize that this is a great opportunity for kids from the CNMI to come to. ...

Hal's report (much shorter and bare-bones):

Junior College Auditions are done for the performers-tech yet to go. The three students garnered 11 call backs. In addition, when they visited the call backs, they went as a unit, and attracted further interest from the call-back colleges for the entire threesom.

IE's done, students seem satisfied with their work

"How To Succede in Business without Really Trying" was a great show, we had seats main floor center. Back to the balcony tomorrow.

And then online I found this You Tube video. The comments from the woman who adjudicated six (6) hours of monologues are insightful.

A great big thank you to adjudicators--I can't imagine six hours of student monologues.

The Chapter Select Showcase offers a chance to see other schools' productions of one act plays. You get a good chance to see plays you might not have seen, to watch the talent of other students your age, and to have fun.

Festival schedules are available online. You can see the Workshop Checklist to start figuring out what sessions you want to attend. There are a lot to choose from--acting on camera, Shakespeare, masks, puppetry, auditioning Broadway, portfolios, selecting a college, learning how to choreograph hip hop, directing, sorting through royalties and rights, using theatre as a social voice, clowning, yoga, singing improv, songwriting, stage combat (falling, rolling, flipping, fisticuffs, quarterstaff!), tattoos, magic, wearing wigs--AND MORE!

The problem of figuring out which workshops to attend is complicated, not only by the great selections competing for time slots, but also because there are other demands and draws on participants' time--indivual events (schedules are also online-linked on the main page of Festival at EdTA); college auditions and exhibitor tables and booths (worth a visit by any student interested in going on to college); tech challenge (learn by watching other students compete!); and Chapter Select and Freestyle Theatre plays. 2010 Festival News & Notes #2-college auditions

One of the best opportunities for our students at the International Thespian Festival is the opportunity to audition with colleges. In theatre, college auditions are often a must, but because of our distance from mainland colleges, our students have few chances to participate. At Festival, at least 40 different universities and colleges will be conducting unified auditions. Juniors in high school can audition in either performance or technical theatre.

A complete, interactive list of the participating colleges is on the ITS site here--just scroll down to the "auditions" list.

In addition to the schools auditioning, there are exhibitors--usually theatre-related businesses, but also some schools who have a booth or table set-up where you can get information and give information.

For your convenience, I'll try organizing the auditioners and exhibitors by state (below). But first some auditioning tips:

1. Have copies of a current resume (headshot-optional) and a business card to hand out. Have these in an accessible, neat place.

2. Look over the information about the colleges BEFORE you get to Festival, so you are informed and make a good impression. This includes knowing basic things like 1) what state the college is in; 2) what majors and degrees it offers; 3) how big it is.

3. Consider what your strongest points are, and what your weaknesses are; figure out how you can "pitch" yourself as a good candidate HONESTLY.

4. You will get information from various colleges. Figure out your organization system ahead of time--will you have a folder where you put all the information you get? Or do you want to have a binder with separate pockets for different schools? or some other method of keeping track?

5. Make a list of questions for each of the schools from whom you get call backs. DON'T ask questions about basic information that is available on their websites--you should already have checked that. DO ask questions about your concerns and interests.

2010 Mock Trial

Congrats to the participants and winners of the Mock Trial Competition in Saipan 2010.

First place winners: MOUNT CARMEL SCHOOL. Final tally was 6 to 3 in their favor. They will travel to Philadelphia for the national competition in May 2010.

Second place winners: MARIANAS BAPTIST SCHOOL. Hard fought. Good job.

Third place winners: SAIPAN SOUTHERN HIGH SCHOOL. They're already talking about next year!

Fourth place winners: ROTA HIGH SCHOOL. First time in the winners circle and great performance.

Team Professionalism award: MARIANAS HIGH SCHOOL. This award speaks volumes. Congrats.

I don't have all the individual awards (best prosecution attorney, witness, best defense attorney, witness), but what I do know is that MHS student Christian Cruz won for Best Prosecution Witness; MCS student Anastasia Schweiger won for Best Defense Witness. I also heard that the best attorney awards on both sides went to MBA students (but I don't know the names of the winners).

The competition was very good. The students worked very hard and show tremendous talent and promise. Congratulations again to everyone who participated. Thanks for a good show!

Student Designs Take the Stage!

I've posted the student designs side-by-side with the (almost) finished costumes on my personal blog--you can see them here. The photos there and below were taken at dress rehearsal. Since then, we've added the white buckle to Maggie's day-dress, completed the striped add-ons for Max's Otello costume, repaired the evening dresses to fit better, and otherwise adjusted the costumes as needed.

The show is funny and fabulous, and the costumes fit the show perfectly!

Thespian Students Team Up With FOA

Thespian costume design students are teaming up with the Friends of the Arts for the upcoming production of LEND ME A TENOR, a comedy by Ken Ludwig.

Each of seven students hope to have one of their designed costumes in the production. They are excited and working hard.

Some of the students met with the cast and measured them so they could estimate fabric yardage needs and get a sense of the shape and look of each actor and actress.
Rochelle Dimapilis measures Sophia Kakuse, who will play Maggie, a young romantic who wants an adventure.

Donna Monton tries to strangle Rich Hamilton, no, measures his neck; Rich plays the title role of the tenor Tito Merelli.

Rozette Bunao measures Linn Asper, who plays Saunders, the Cleveland Opera general manager.

They have been slowly looking through all of the costume stock of the FOA and Thespian Society to see what is already on hand that can be used. And they have been to some of the stores on island, looking for fabric for their designs.

Thanks to FOA for the opportunity for our costume design students to see their renderings be actualized. The play goes up February 12th-14th at PIC.

Attention COACHES, as discussed at our first meeting at Dan DanElementary School, next school year, we will only have a Regionals event in December.

To qualify for the December Regionals 2010, competitors must have won a ribbon in the January 2010 meet or the March 2010 meet AND a ribbon in any of the meets (probably October 2010 and November 2010) in the upcoming school year. However, not all students will be invited to the March 2010 event as it is also a REGIONALS event.

(In other words, students probably need to compete in the January 2010 event!)

Because of the confusion regarding the invitations to register with the new codes, we decided to modify our registration process for this upcoming event in October.

Please submit all participants' registration by NAME, not code.

This will only apply to schools who have not accepted the invite and registered with the database.If your school has already received the invite and registered with the new codes, you do NOT need to re-submit the registration with names for we can look at the database.

Because of these changes, we are extending the registration deadline by one day. The new deadline for the October 10th event will be on Saturday, October 3rd. As always, please submit your registration using excel and please remember to write in the proctor's names.

Tropical Storm Melor (a/k/a 20 W) has been up-graded to a Typhoon.

Different tracking methods put it either between Saipan and Rota, on target for Saipan, or heading just north of us. It looks like it's due to arrive about Saturday morning.

The invitation for code registration (so we have a database of which code belongs to whom) is in the process of being sent out. Thanks for your patience.

The last day to register for the upcoming October event is this by midnight on Friday, October 2, 2009. We will not entertain any late registration and no excuse will be taken.

Just like last year, we would like the registration to be submitted EXCEL format. A sample format is attached to this e-mail

We only want the codes (no names), Grade, event entered into, and PROCTOR'S name.
We will not accept any registration if the proctor's names are missing. Remember for every ten students, we want one proctor.
In the case that a proctor can't make it to the event, have a substitute readily available to avoid delays.
This is a new school year so if you choose to assign new codes for students, that's fine with us, so long as they use the SAME codes throughout the year.

The revised rules will be posted online as soon as we make final revisions and submit it to Hal. Please remember to collect the $1 registration fee beforehand to speed up the registration process.

IMPORTANT! Message for all coaches and administrators--PGFC, NJFL, NFL

The WPR board met during this past week and agreed on a schedule of meetings and some changes this year.

Basic terminology:
Coaches are those who help students with technique and rehearsals.

Administrators are those who do the much more important, but less glorious, job of keeping things organized, registering students for competitions, etc.

If you are short-handed at your schools, it is more important to have an Administrator than a coach.

Judges are NEUTRAL arbitrators who follow the rules and adjudge the competitions, assigning both scores and rankings to the competitors.

Certified Judges are those judges who complete certain requirements that the Board sets and pass a test. In the event of ties, the certified judge's scoring/ranking will prevail. And we're looking into the possibility of some kind of remuneration for certified judges.

All competing schools must provide judges in compliance with the formula that is set for each competition.

Changes:
The first meetings of the competition year have been set. (See below.) The agendas, which are not yet finalized, will include important information about some changes that affect everyone. (On-line code assignments, code changes, etc.) You need to be sure to attend the meetings so you don't miss out on these details and changes. If you do things incorrectly, you may jeopardize your students' participation (and wins!) in the competition events.

Thespian Auditions

Thespians of the Western Pacific Islands are holding their auditions for the Chapter Play. What play? We're not exactly sure--we've got it narrowed down to three, but it depends on how many students show up and the general balance of the students.

Right now it looks like the setting will be 1930's America.

So students in grades 6 through 12 are encouraged to audition: Tuesday (today) 3 to 5 PM; Wednesday (Sept. 9) from 3 to 4:30 PM and Thursday (Sept. 10) from 3 to 5 PM.

You don't need to come to all auditions--just make it to one!

If you're interested in DIRECTING! yay! come on Tuesday or Wednesday, please.

Thespians of the Western Pacific Islands will be having a meeting this Friday September 4, 2009 for students in grades 6 through 12 who are interested in participating in the annual Chapter Play. This is a chance to express interest in being on-stage or helping back-stage. Meeting times are 1:30 PM and 4 PM (to accommodate those in school and those not yet back to classes) and will be held at MHS, room 101D. Contact Mr. Harold Easton at 237-3230 for more information.

While we were at the ITS Festival, some of us (notably Mrs. Miura) went to a session or two on theatre make-up.

So I thought some might be interested in this feature, about creating through make-up the look of Fenrir Greyback, the werewolf, in the latest Harry Potter film, THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE.

Nick Dudman is the make-up creator, and he has an impressive resume.

On Friday, I attended a workshop on Commedia D'ell Arte. After checking out some masks, we got a short lecture on the history of the artform and some of the more famous stock characters. Then the class had an interactive session learning how to move as the various characters, using stock mannerisms to bring out the established characteristics of the Commedia cast.

Festival News & Notes # 11--Report about the Thespian Festival

I had hoped to give minute-by-minute reporting from the Thespian Festival. Two things interfered. 1--I was busy! and 2--I never managed to get on-line from my own computer (where I have been uploading the photos).

So here is a belated report--appropriately long and detailed! Of course, there are many more details, and I'm sure there are more photos and video of events from the 2009 TWPI team. (E-mail me and I'll post them here!)

But for now--this will have to do!

Wow! 19 students and 8 adults formed the 2009 team for Thespians of the Western Pacific Islands. All arrived in Lincoln, Nebraska on Saturday, June 20, 2009, and stayed at the Comfort Inn. We checked out on Monday morning, June 22.

The TWPI students spent the weekend recovering from jet lag, rehearsing for their individual events, and getting acclimated to their surroundings. The adults worked on scheduling and dealing with the myriad of small issues that traveling with so many students entails. Despite the heat (it was so hot even our tropical island kids were complaining), we managed to get in some shopping and a Sunday visit to the Lincoln Zoo.

Monday, June 22: We moved into the dorms at the University of Lincoln on Monday: the girls moved into Schramm hall and the boys into Pound. Everybody got their "badge" (a pouch hanging on a long string that had to be worn as a necklace)and key card. The high school juniors registered for college auditions, and then Monday afternoon, we started going our own ways, exploring the campus and finding our ways around.

Students were encouraged (um, mandated?) to attend a workshop. I went to the "Drawing for beginning costume designers" one with Terry McMonigle. It was good, and very well attended, with some of the TWPI students in there, too.

In the evening, some of us went to the THESPIANS: THE MOVIE. Some went to the opening production of THE COMPLETE WORKS OF WM. SHAKESPEARE (ABRIDGED). Another alternative was the flying exhibition--how to use technology to "fly" on stage.

And of course there was the imprompu I.E. rehearsal after dinner (or was this after breakfast on Tuesday?).

Tuesday, June 23: The entire day was devoted to individual events. Our students' schedules were spread out over the day, with some competing at 10:30 AM and some not until 3 PM and everyone packed in between those times. The competitions were also spread out among various buildings on the UNL campus.

We all tried to support each other, and attended the performances of our TWPI students, to the extent possible. For example, I watched Anna Rose in solo musical, Tommy and Moon in mime, Joseph in monologue, and Reece in solo musical. Besides these talented performances, I also saw some terrific performances by students from other schools.

Tommy and Moon with the Texas mime champions, Jonathan Thomas and Curtis Lee. (Both of these teams would eventually score three overall-superior ratings! And get honorable mentions on the Festival Showcase program.)

And after IEs, two of our juniors (Miki Nadia Dela Cruz and Adeleyah Mojica) had college auditions. It was an intense and tiring day.

All of our meals were in the Pound cafeteria--typical dorm food. We saw many students from other schools there, and met some of them. We were also entertained by the kitchen staff, who played trumpet and piano and otherwise performed for us nearly every afternoon.

On Tuesday evening, we watched the main stage performance of Disney's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, performed by Memorial High School Performing Arts Center students at the Leid Center. They had amazing sets, strong vocal performances, and simple but effective choreography. (I liked the costuming of the Mount Carmel performance better. The music performance of the two shows was about equal. And of course, I liked the personal connection and energy of our own MCS students when they put on this play!)

Tuesday evening's dance was "character bash." Lots of students from other troupes dressed up. I didn't go. (Don't know if others did.)

Wednesay, June 24: We had another busy day. Chapter Director Harold Easton required that the students be at breakfast by 7:30 AM. After breakfast (meaning about 8:30 AM), the students did a read-through of their play (scheduled in the Chapter Select Showcase for Thursday afternoon).

We then attended the 10 AM main stage performance of FOREVER PLAID (Stuart Ross/James Raitt), performed by FMHS students. Lots of good oldies music!

And then we went to lunch and to more workshops or plays in the afternoon. Matt Wheat was busy the entire time in leadership workshops with the International Thespian Officers; the rest of the TWPI team took advantage of the variety of activities offered.

I went to a workshop on "writing the 10-minute play." This workshop had more than 20 students in it, but I was the only TWPI member there. Students and chaperones were busy in other workshops and watching plays in the Chapter Select and Freestyle theatres.

At the same time in the afternoon on Wednesay, our techie junior (Kay Park) had her college auditions. Harold Easton and other adults were busy with management issues and also festival activities (scoping out the theatre for our performance and arranging tech support, for example).

Wednesday evening we watched THE BOYS NEXT DOOR (Tom Griffin), staged by Owensboro High School. This drama had great acting and a very poignant script.

The play finished about 10:30 PM and then our students rehearsed their play! Yes it was late. But they came to Festival to work, and so they did!

I bailed out about midnight. The students continued their rehearsal, but fortunately did make their 1 AM curfew. And everyone slept--exhausted from the long days of the Festival week so far. Wednesday's dance was the "Wear Red" for BC/EFA benefit. I didn't go.

Thursday, June 25: The students "slept in." And then attended the 10 AM showing of ALMOST MAINE (John Cariani) staged by Dubuque Senior High School. The play was set in Maine, and there were tons of pine trees and fake snow on the stage. The theatre itself was so cold that Mrs. Miura commented on how great the special effects were! The play was sweet and funny and sad, another good job by students.

After this play, we ate lunch and then spent the rest of the afternoon focused on the TWPI presentation of THE MARVELOUS PLAYBILL (Miguel Cervantes), staged in the Howell Theatre. Perhaps waiting was the hardest part--in the hall, quietly because another play was on stage, with last minute nerves a jangle!

The production was a success! Our students did a really good job. And now, the pressure was OFF!

And news was trickling in: Miki had about 10 college callbacks. Adeleyah had nearly as many. And eventually, Kay ended up with 21 COLLEGE CALL BACKS! A new record for a TWPI team member! So these juniors were busy the rest of the Festival setting up interviews with the college representatives who had invited them for call backs, meeting with these people, and learning about possible programs and benefits for their futures.

Thursday evening, we watched A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM (Shakespeare), presented by the Missouri all-state cast of Thespians. The bard's work was kept in tact script-wise, but the setting and costuming was modernized. This gave the production a bit of a bizarre edge to it. The faerie costumes were my favorite aspect of the production.

Thursday's dance was Zombie Prom. I didn't go. (Don't know if others did.)

Friday, June 26: We were free, relaxed, and still busy. The 10 AM show was THE RIMERS OF ELDRITCH (Lanford Wilson). (I admit-I missed this. I finally really slept in!) We went to lunch and more workshops. I tried to attend one on set design, but the presenter never showed up. (I sat there with about 10 other students, waiting... we were all disappointed.) Later I attended one with Anna Rose on Commedia d'ell Arte. (Photos on this to be posted later.) This was a lively workshop, where we got to see and touch and try on masks, hear a brief lecture on the history and (stereotypical) characters of Commedia, and then practice some of the moves that characterize some of the more popular characters.

Friday dinner, the TWPI adults joined other adults from region 1 for a dinner. It was nice to meet and greet people from our region and hear what they're doing, their triumphs and concerns.

Friday evening, we watched ALL SHOOK UP (Joe DiPietro/ Elvis Presley). This was more fun oldies music wrapped around a typical comic romance.

Friday night was the auction. I didn't go. We had a meeting of TWPI team adults, though, because we'd gotten back the IEs.

Saturday, June 27: We were all exhausted. We watched the Festival Showcase--those students who got first place in each of their categories. We had some success, too: MHS students Sung Yul (Tommy) Baik and Moon Hyo Lee got an honorable mention in mime for their overall superior rating. And Kagman High students Aisha Joyner and Akeiko Dela Cruz also got an honorable mention in duet acting for their overall superior rating. Yay! (These students were among the top 10 in their performance areas. And that's really saying something when you think that more than 500 students competed, and the students competing won their right to compete by beating out thousands of students from their respective states--first at the district level, then at regionals, and then at the state level!)

Students ate lunch at the dorm, and then took an afternoon off--for more shopping, an evening out, and to receive their individual I.E. evaluations. In all our students did well.

I went to a final workshop--on wigs! What a riot!

And then there was a flurry of packing, and most of the TWPI team departed at 3 AM (June 28, Sunday morning), with just a few of us waiting for other travel arrangements (or already gone early to NJFL).

This was truly an experience! Congrats to all of the TWPI team 2009 for a job well done.

Festival News & Notes # 10-workshop schedule

The workshop schedule is posted on-line. It's worth checking out. Now is the time to take a few moments to figure out what you want to attend.

The schedule is divided into I and II--these being time designations (not level of the workshop). The workshops scheduled for I are from 2:30 to 4 PM and those for II are 4:15 to 5:45 PM.

Obviously, as with all schedules, you'll need to plan carefully.

On Monday, for example, do you want to prepare for your college audition? In the "I" you have a choice between preparing for a university audition or building the perfect audition song. (I hope to be at "drawing for the beginning costumer.")

On Monday for the "II" schedule, there is a workshop on Commedia D'ell Arte! (We should hand out our playbills there, but since it's called "unmasked" I fear it might be more about masks...) Or you can go a workshop to make "your college audition the best." Or you can continue with drawaing for beginning costumers, or find a workshop on something else of interest.

The rest of the week continues with too many choices...
And of course, you have to remember that, besides these great workshops, their are the college auditions, the individual events, the main stage productions, the Chapter Select showcase productions (including ours), the Freestyle theatre productions, and the chance to visit with the exhibitors!

Festival News & Notes # 8-Individual Events & Mutual Support

Below are two hand-written schedules. If you click on them, you'll get a larger, readable version.

One shows the individual events schedule by time and location, with each student shown where they will be performing.

The other is a grid to show who is expected to show up to support each student. As discussed in our planning meetings, we want every TWPI student to have maximum support. This means that we have not left it to chance as to who is expected to support whom, but have assigned each student to attend the I.E.s of at least 3 other students, according to this schedule. The logistics of this do not make this an easy task or one where adjustments can readily be made.

Although you may think you have time to cram in watching another I.E. before ones you're assigned to watch. Please don't try--we don't want you to be late for the ones where your support is really needed.

NJFL/NFL Showcase

Each year we send some of our most talented youth to the national competitions of the National Forensic League and National Junior Forensic League. Each year the CNMI team comes back with numerous awards and students who are ranked in the nation's top 100 and even the top 10 -- an amazing testament to the success of our program and the talent of our kids when you think of the thousands of students in the US national programs.

This year the NJFL competition will be in San Antonio, Texas, and the NFL will be in Birmingham, Alabama. Those selected to go and represent the CNMI competed throughout this past year to win this honor. During this whole year of competition, only their fellow competitors and the judges have had the chance to see them perform. Now, you will have an opportunity to see their programs before they leave for the competition,

On June 9, from 6:00 to 8:30 pm, at the Multi-Purpose Center, these talented students from both the public and private schools in the CNMI, will present a SHOWCASE of their programs that they will be performing in the national competitions. Come and support their endeavors and enjoy their performances. There is no cost to attend.

Those who have attended the FOA membership meetings know how talented these students are. Come and enjoy and wish them luck.

Final Season Concert from Pacific Winds and SSHS

The Pacific Winds would like to invite everyone to their 15th season spring concerts this weekend.

This is the annual season-ending concert celebrating our 15th year of community band performances. The Saipan Pacific Winds community concert band has 30 members this year and is conducted by myself and Ms. Christine Nierras. We are thrilled to welcome some special guests to perform with us onstage at the Multi Purpose Center in Susupe this weekend. On Saturday evening, June 6 (6:30 pm) we are featuring the Saipan Southern High School Manta Band. This award winning ensemble will perform soundtrack music from the new Harry Potter film, a stirring version of the classic work, Alvamar Overture by James Barnes, and their signature piece which earned them a second straight Gold Award at the Tumon Bay Music Festival, "When Angels Weep" by David Shaffer. Of course, the Pacific Winds will perform as well, entertaining the audience with a mixture of jazz selections, marches, pop favorites, rock hits, and even an Irish Jig.

Tickets are just $5.00 general admission and $3.00 for students/seniors.

The Pacific Winds will deliver an encore matinee performance on Sunday afternoon, June 7th (3:30 pm) at the Multi Purpose Center. This time, they will be joined by homegrown singing talent Ms. Lori Mendez whose long awaited homecoming follows an extended period of musical study in Guam and now New York City. Her career and burgeoning reputation has spanned several continents, including performances with many of today's notable opera stars. She will perform a number of selections ranging from spirituals to opera, broadway to classical, in her much anticipated debut concert here in Saipan.

The Pacific Winds will perform many of their most requested pieces too, including music from the pop group Chicago, the Jazz Police, Ralph MacDonald's "Just the two of us" and many more favorites. Ticket prices are the same as Saturday.

The Saipan Pacific Winds is a non-profit organization dedicated to giving all Saipan wind and percussion musicians the opportunity to collectively share their talents with the community through several yearly concerts and special performances. Festival presents a tremendous opportunity to take in a lot of plays. Besides the productions staged on the "main stage"--which are generally high tech, costume and set intensive, and full-length plays and musicals, there are shorter, "easier" plays produced in the Chapter Select Showcase. These are also staged by various Thespian troupes and chapters, and generally achieve a wholly-satisfactory degree of stage-craft and interest. They are also shorter and, because of the limitations on set and tech intensity, use more imagination and innovation in the presentations.
