The Secret Garden

TWPI students staged the production of The Secret Garden on Friday and Saturday nights, November 21st and 22nd. Both nights had large audiences and good performances. Yay!

A couple of photos, courtesy of The Saipan Tribune (Nazario Rodriguez). The newspaper will (I hope) carry a story about the show on Tuesday.

And this one, from A. Zotomayer of Beach Road press. (Hoping for more from her.)

THE SECRET GARDEN

COME to the musical!

COME to The Secret Garden.

Friday and Saturday, 7 PM at Charley's Cabaret, PIC.

This play is based on the classic children's book by Frances Hodson Burnett.

The story of a girl, Mary Lennox, orphaned when her parents succumb to cholera in India, and her English Uncle, Archibald Craven, is set against the dreariness of an English manor house and the stuffiness of English attitudes, but is a tribute to the strength of hope and love.

The music is fabulous, too!

Tickets are just $5 for students and children (4 and older); and $7.50 for adults.
Dessert is available for $5 and you may also purchase drinks from the PIC bar at Charley's.

You can find more information about cast and such in earlier posts.

ITS, NFL-College Night

Every year the NFL/TWPI Board holds a College Night for Juniors and Seniors who are NFL or ITS participants. At this event we introduce those Colleges and Universities that actively recruited students at the NFL Nationals and the ITS Festival and encourage our students to investigate them.

University of Wyoming

This event is open to all NFL/ITS participants, whether public or private school students. If you haven't yet participated in these events but want college information, you can still come, and START participating in NFL and ITS events at the next competition!

It has been our experience that if our NFL and ITS students apply to these schools, they may get special consideration for admissions and scholorship benefits.

University of Cincinnati-CCM

This year, we are holding the event on Friday Oct. 17 between 6:30 and 8:00 pm at Marianas High School, Room 101D.

We hope Juniors and Seniors can attend.

ITS, PGFC--The Results Are In

Competitions are exciting! The first Thespian and PGFC competition results are in and posted at the main site Thespians here and PGFC here.

THESPIANS
All I can say is that the FRESHMAN had some very commanding upsets in the Thespian competition! Freshman topped the leader board in Monologue and Solo Musical, pushing experienced upperclassmen into third and lower positions! The upper classmen held onto first place in Duet Acting and Mime, but challengers also showed well.

The competition fields are so deep in Monologue, Duet Acting, and Solo Musical that there are competitors who don't place and just get participation points.

In Junior Thespians, the competition field was light for the first round. And each competitor scored at least one first place. Duet Acting had only one competition team. Mime had none. So middle schools and junior highs-LISTEN UP. It's not too late to get your students into this competition.

PGFC
These results show strong participation by lots of schools and talent everywhere! Any one else who wants to give their feedback or analysis-or just brag about how well their kids did--Feel free to add your views in the comment section!

ITS-First Thespian Competition

Despite the late start of school and the shortened planning time, the first Thespian competition came off successfully!

There were many high school students competing, with entrants in ALL categories. Yay! There were also some junior thespians competing, but not enough and no one competed in MIME.
Congratulations to all the students who showed up and competed. Despite some mix-ups and mistakes on knowing and following the rules, the competition was a success and the students were great!

And a special thanks to our volunteer judges, coaches and coordinators, and "president-for-life".
SOME SPECIAL RULE NOTICES:
It is important for students to know and follow the rules. Many rule violations result in disqualifications (which means the student disqualified will only get a participation point, and not be otherwise ranked with the other students competing).
Common mistakes:
1. In solo musical--the student must sing a song from musical theatre (Broadway usually). ITS has changed the rules this year, and songs from movies are not allowable. Other popular songs have never been allowed.
2. In solo musical--the accompanying musical track may not have any vocal singing on it. Students can sing to karaoke or minus-one tracks, or sing a capella.
3. In monologue--the two pieces must CONTRAST. And Mr. Easton has clarified the rules by saying that they must come from 2 DIFFERENT PLAYS.
4. In monologue and duet acting--pieces must be from published plays or other published stage performance pieces. They can't be poems or original writing, etc.
5. There are specific format rules for costume and set design; also film. Be sure not to get too close to the edge (literally and figuratively).
Good job, everyone!
